Miscellaneous Steel Estimator

Location: Fremont, CA

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Miscellaneous Steel Estimator to join a growing preconstruction and estimating team. This role is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and detailed cost estimates for structural and miscellaneous steel projects across the commercial, industrial, and public works sectors. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in steel fabrication and erection processes, proven expertise in reading blueprints and technical drawings, and the ability to manage high-volume, large-scale estimates.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on projects ranging from $40K to $20M , with expectations of handling up to $30M in estimates annually (and up to $50M for more senior-level candidates). You’ll collaborate closely with leadership, project managers, and external stakeholders, playing a critical role in securing new business and ensuring accurate, competitive proposals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze structural and architectural drawings, specifications, and related documents to develop accurate and detailed cost estimates.
  • Perform material take-offs, labor and equipment calculations, and apply unit pricing for conceptual budgets and competitive bids.
  • Lead pre-bid meetings, occasional site visits (local), and risk evaluations to ensure comprehensive and competitive estimates.
  • Identify scope gaps, inconsistencies, and value engineering opportunities.
  • Solicit and evaluate vendor, supplier, and subcontractor pricing for materials, coatings, freight, erection, and special services.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to align estimates with production and field capabilities.
  • Develop and maintain historical bid records, cost databases, and estimating tools.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior estimators as needed.
  • Support smooth project handoffs to operations after award.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in steel estimating (structural and/or miscellaneous metals).
  • Strong ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings.
  • Proficiency in take-off and estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, Building Connected, Tekla EPM, or equivalent).
  • Solid understanding of steel fabrication and erection processes.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • 10+ years of experience in steel estimating, with proven ability to manage $50M+ in annual estimates.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
  • Background in commercial, biotech, healthcare, or public works projects.
