Job Description

Ottawa Area ISD is excited to announce we’re seeking a qualified and experienced individual to provide Special Education consultative services to support the administrators and instructional staff at the Ottawa Area Center.

This role is fundamentally focused on providing quality education to students with moderate cognitive impairments at our center-based educational setting, Ottawa Area Center (OAC), which is dedicated to serving special needs students. 

Essential Job Functions: Understand and apply a deep knowledge of special education services and student needs. Provide strategies, ideas, and methods for improving student programming incorporating student assessments and diagnostics, student medical needs, and program opportunities.

Responsibilities and Duties: Provide consultative services to staff and administration at OAC in the areas of instruction, school improvement, MTSS, PBIS teaching principles, curriculum, behavior, research, augmentative and alternative communication, and professional development activities. Model professionalism through positivity, confidence, a solution-focused mindset, clear communication, leadership skills, initiative, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.


  • Provide instructional support and coaching to classroom teachers


    • Work side-by-side with teachers in the classroom as needed

    • Help implement new teaching strategies or behavior plans

    • Model a variety of instructional strategies

    • Problem-solve challenging situations with teachers

  • May hold a caseload of students at times to support unique students needs 

  • Collaborate with Curriculum Consultant, Teacher Consultant, and Behavior Consultant on instructional practices

  • Work alongside staff to improve best practices in IEP writing and classroom instruction

  • Collaborate with staff on data collection, data tracking, and/or data graphing

  • Mentor new staff and help provide onboarding support

  • Provide technical support to ensure compliance with state and federal law

  • Plan/lead sessions of professional development with the director or assistant director

  • Mediate disagreements between staff members

  • Lead committees in areas of best practice 

  • Participate in weekly leadership team meetings

  • Work with teachers on instructional strategies and coaching

  • Coordinate activities that support school improvement initiatives/goals

  • Curriculum development

  • Review of "effective practices" research

  • Plan professional development activities

  • Act as a community partnership liaison

  • Provide input to the evaluation process through classroom observations and walkthroughs

Qualifications and Skills Required:


  • Education : MA degree or higher in Special Education or Special Education Administration

  • Experience : Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Special Education Teacher

  • Essential skills : Positivity, confidence, a solution-focused mindset, clear communication, leadership, initiative, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

  • Certifications : Special Education Teacher certification required; Special Education Administration certification preferred.

Compensation:


  • Salary: Grade 18 . $76,700 - mid-$80,000’s 

  • Benefits: Full benefits package
