The University of Miami/UHealth Neuromuscular Division in the Department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Genetic Counselor to join a growing neurogenetics program with both clinical and research responsibilities to work in the UHealth Medical Campus. The Genetic Counselor 1 provides genetic counseling, education, and psychological support for those with genetic disorders, birth defects, positive newborn screening results or who are at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. Provides services in response to a wide variety of referral indications, such as pediatric and adult genetics, cancer, and preconception. Provides outreach and education to healthcare professionals and the general population. Establishes and maintains partnerships with community and disease organizations. Develops educational and promotional materials. The Neuromuscular Division in the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Genetic Counselor to join a growing neurogenetics program with both clinical and research responsibilities. Research is the major focus of this position (60% effort), with responsibilities oriented around activities of the CReATe Consortium, an NIH-supported Rare Diseases Consortium focused on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) and related motor neuron disorders. Research responsibilities will include genetic counseling and assistance in the interpretation of next generation sequencing data. On the clinical front (40% effort), the Genetic Counselor will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team, primarily serving as a genetic resource for patients who have or are at risk for neuromuscular genetic disorders. Research duties include understanding research programs, assisting with study protocols, recruiting and enrolling participants, providing counseling for research participants, assisting with interpretation of sequencing data, maintaining documentation, and participating in outreach. Clinical duties include gathering medical history, providing genetic counseling and support, facilitating patient decision making, assisting with genetic test ordering and interpretation, managing commercial genetic testing, working with neurologists and allied health professionals in specialty clinics, and participating in training of neurology residents and fellows. The position reports to the principal investigator and Division Chief, Dr. Michael Benatar and Division Administrator. Qualifications include a Master’s degree in a relevant field, genetic counselor license in Florida, board eligibility or certification, excellent communication skills, knowledge or interest in neurogenetic and neuromuscular diseases, and experience with research and patient care.
