Position Overview

The Spaceport America Fire Department (SAFD) is seeking a dynamic and organized Fire Captain to serve as an on-duty shift supervisor. This position combines frontline emergency leadership with key administrative duties to support SAFD operations. Captains lead a crew of 4–5 firefighters per 48-hour shift and ensure readiness for all-hazard responses across the unique aerospace and structural environments of Spaceport America.

Captains also act as department representatives to the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) as needed, participate in interagency coordination, and support SAFD's mission through effective scheduling, resource management, and administrative oversight.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Supervise, train, and mentor a crew of 4–5 firefighters across ARFF, structural firefighting, and EMS disciplines.
  • Serve as the Incident Commander for initial response until relieved by higher authority.
  • Ensure crew readiness, apparatus checks, and compliance with airfield safety and communications protocols.
  • Oversee and conduct daily and weekly duties, including facility maintenance, tool and apparatus inspections, facility walk-throughs, extinguisher checks, and EMS equipment & drug accountability.
  • Maintain situational awareness across air and spaceflight operations, and respond accordingly to incidents involving spaceflight operations, aircraft, and tenants such as Virgin Galactic.

Administrative and Managerial Duties

  • Manage shift schedules, assign personnel to apparatus, and ensure all tours are fully staffed with required skill sets and certifications.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, including shift pass-ons, inspection logs, apparatus maintenance documentation, training reports, and personnel evaluations.
  • Provide operational insights and professional recommendations to department leadership.
  • Occasionally represent the SAFD in meetings with the New Mexico Spaceport Authority and other stakeholders.
  • Submit and justify routine and extraordinary purchase requests aligned with department needs and budgetary constraints.

Interagency Coordination

  • Liaise with security, airfield operations, and mutual aid partners, including Sierra County Fire, SVH EMS, and air medical providers.
  • Participate in safety briefings, drills, and coordination meetings across tenant and agency operations at the Spaceport.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or Emergency Management preferred.
  • Current certifications:
    • IFSAC Fire Officer I (or AHJ equivalent); Fire Officer II preferred
    • Firefighter II (IFSAC, ProBoard, and AHJ equivalent)
    • New Mexico EMT (AEMT/Paramedic preferred)
    • ARFF certification (preferred)
    • NIMS ICS 300 & 400
  • At least 8 years of experience in fire service with a minimum of 2 years in a proven leadership, supervisory, or administrative role.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operational crews and perform under pressure.
  • Valid driver's license; must obtain airfield driver clearance upon hire.
  • Ability to pass a background check and meet Spaceport America (ITAR) standards.

Preferred Attributes

  • Strong administrative, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in scheduling, personnel tracking, and budgetary request systems.
  • Comfortable representing the fire department in formal meetings and professional settings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with aerospace operations, FAA Part 139, and NFPA standards.
