Job Description

Overview Criminal Investigator role at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). This is a non-bargaining unit position under the Department of Homeland Security. Locations vary across 235 duty locations in the United States. This is an open continuous announcement through 12/31/2025 with initial and ongoing cut-off dates for qualified applications. Duties Conduct and coordinate high-level comprehensive investigations involving individuals, groups, or large organizations at local, national, or international levels. Use electronic surveillance, interviews, polygraph examination, and physical surveillance to obtain evidence. Make arrests, confront multiple suspects, and secure scenes in potentially dangerous environments. Obtain signed statements, affidavits, and documentary evidence for reports or case records. Prepare sworn testimony on behalf of the government in criminal and federal grand jury cases. Requirements and Qualifications You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Males born after 12/31/1959 must certify Selective Service registration. Must successfully pass a background investigation (may include a polygraph). Pre-employment medical examination (may include psychological evaluation) and medical standards must be met. Pre-employment drug test; positive results may disqualify candidacy. One-year probationary period upon appointment; may require mobility. Must carry a firearm; certain domestic violence convictions limit eligibility. Will be required to testify in court; ability to testify without impeachment concerns. Must have a valid driver’s license prior to final job offer. Pre-employment Physical Fitness Test (PFT) required; pass required for selection and during training. Recommendation includes completion of Basic Training (FLETC CITP) and HSI Special Agent Training Program. Position may require overtime and irregular hours (LEAP). Education and Experience (GL-9 eligibility) You qualify for GL-9 based on one of the following: Experience: One year of specialized experience at GS-7 or equivalent performing investigations in areas such as narcotics, financial crimes, fraud, counterterrorism, or related fields; and related duties such as conducting interviews and assisting in report preparation. Education: A master’s degree or two graduate academic years leading to such a degree from an accredited institution. Combination of education and experience meeting 100% of the requirement. Additional Information Background investigation for Top Secret clearance may include credit and financial reviews. Criminal Investigators may require occasional overtime and travel for polygraph or other assessments at applicant’s expense as applicable.
