Overview Assistant Director, Athletic Communications – Queens, NY. Full-Time/Regular position in Athletics at St. John’s University. Specific Job Title Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Reports To Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations Job Summary The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications serves as the media relations specialist for assigned sports and provides communications support for all 17 St. John’s athletic programs. This role builds relationships with local and national media to increase coverage and exposure. It includes executing a comprehensive messaging plan through news releases, game notes, previews, student-athlete and staff profiles, and content for the official athletics website, social media and other digital platforms. Reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. Essential Functions Directs communications strategy for assigned sports and assists with other sports when necessary. Produces press releases, game notes, media guides and records statistical information. Coordinates interviews with local and national media outlets. Serves as a media relations expert for teams and coaches to maximize positive exposure opportunities. Updates all news and features on the official athletics website and manages digital and social media platforms. Staffs home and selected away events and supervises game-day/statistical crews. Cultivates positive working relationships with coaches, administrators and members of the media. Provides communications support to other divisions of the Athletic Department. Adheres to University branding guidelines. Willing to assist on game-day crews and take on other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. Establishes and maintains knowledge of NCAA and BIG EAST rules and university policies; ensures compliance and reports infractions as required. Competencies Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, NCAA LiveScouting, StatCrew or similar software. Proficient with social media platforms (Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram). Photography experience preferred. Supervisory Responsibility Manages graduate assistants and student workers in the athletic communications department. Work Environment Professional office environment and athletic venues (indoor and outdoor). Physical Demands Occasional lifting/moving of equipment weighing 10-20 lbs; standing and movement during duties. Environmental Conditions Work at athletic events in proximity to competition and spectators. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with night and weekend work as required. Travel Travel is required, including local, out-of-area and overnight trips. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or related field preferred. 1–2 years of relevant full-time experience in professional or collegiate athletic communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Preferred Education and Experience Master’s degree in communications, marketing or related field preferred. Additional Eligibility Qualification Experience with videography and video editing.
